Hearing His Voice in the Middle of the Stream

There are moments in life when God reminds us of something from the past—and then adds something fresh to it. Recently, I remembered a vision from one of my early encounters with God. It came back to me vividly, and this time, it brought a deeper meaning.

Let me share it with you as two scenes:

Scene 1: The Dangerous Stream Without a Voice

I find myself standing before a fast and dangerous stream. There’s only one narrow piece of wood laid across it—a single path to cross. It’s slippery and unstable. We have no clear idea how to cross. Doubts and fear are already in our hearts. Now, imagine someone suddenly calling out or a loud noise breaking the silence. In that moment, the chance of falling into the water—and dying—is very high.

This is how life feels when we’re trying to survive in this sinful and distracting world without hearing God’s voice. We're unsure, afraid, and vulnerable to every noise around us.

> Proverbs 14:12

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”

> Psalm 73:2

“But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped.”

Scene 2: The Same Stream, But With His Voice

Now picture the same scene: the same dangerous stream, the same narrow wood to walk on. But this time, I hear a voice gently speaking, “Don’t be afraid. Just focus. Keep going.”

Even if other sounds try to distract me, I don’t listen to them. I only focus on the voice I trust. It gives me courage. I believe in it—and that belief helps me walk straight.

This is what happens when we hear the voice of our Good Shepherd.

> John 10:27

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

> Isaiah 30:21

“And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.”

Even Moses Heard... and Still Struggled

This scene reminded me of Moses. He clearly heard God’s voice and followed it. But the people of Israel didn’t hear God directly. They only saw the challenges. Without a personal connection to the voice, they panicked and lost their way.

Even Moses—someone who spoke with God—made mistakes when he stopped listening closely.

> Numbers 20:12

“But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ‘Because you did not trust in Me enough to honor Me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.’”

So What About Us?

If even Moses could fail, how can we survive this dangerous, sinful world without daily hearing God's voice?

The truth is—we can’t.

We need His voice. Not just once during a retreat, a worship night, or a youth camp. We need it every day, every step.

> Hebrews 3:15

“Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”

Let’s not be satisfied with just knowing about God. Let’s pursue a life of hearing Him. His voice is our safety, our direction, our strength.

In a world full of distractions and noise, may we be the ones who listen closely—and walk faithfully.

Closing Prayer:

Lord, help me to walk this narrow path with my ears tuned only to Your voice. Teach me to hear, to obey, and to stay focused even when distractions come. I don’t want to fall. I want to follow. Amen.
